"With Chicago ranking 89th out of 90 federal districts in convicting gun crime, we are calling on state legislatures to consider passing law that would include mandatory jail time for those criminals convicted of a crime, whether it be a gun violation or another crime involving a gun. In addition we hope the US attorney will start to prosecute many more criminals under the existing federal laws. With a ranking of last place in the country and the explosion of crime we have in Chicago, there is clearly a strong need to use these laws and make it a priority.
As we have seen in New York City the ability to put violent criminals in prison for mandatory sentences and longer periods of time has been very effective in reducing the number of homicides. With 33 percent of gun cases dismissed and a 50/50 chance of any sentencing happening, we believe it's time for Chicago to get serious about convicting its criminals. With the passage of tougher mandatory sentencing, and a focus from the US attorney the city would have the tools to begin this process.
Very simply, the citizens of Chicago deserve to be protected from violent offenders."
